Social Media: The New Age of Stories – Written by Isha Popat

It is very clear that our generation is headed in a new direction as a result of the trending platforms connected to social media. The impacts of these platforms are constantly being debated. There are many benefits including the speed of communication brought to light since the deployment of these platforms. At the same time there is great fallibility in this form of communication. As information moves from person to person, it is bound to gain some bias and perspective.

Delving into this idea of bias, stories are bound to change and develop as they are told and remembered. This is specifically clear through platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok. Social media is known as an array of misinformation. It is commonly heard that one must not overthink what is heard or said through this platform as it will only damage one’s own self-esteem.

Now to better understand the process of storytelling through social media we will first analyze what types of stories are translated. People love to brag about their life highlights. This often brings others down as they spiral down the circle of comparison. A story posted through a social media platform is normally posted under the incentive of popularity and fame. Individuals post their most prized moments also known as the highlights of their lives. They want others to feel envy and desire to want to be like them. This results in false understandings of individuals. Although social media can be a beneficial platform where people can share advice and guide others who aim to follow in their path, it often has the result of degrading the wellbeing of individuals, especially those in their pre-adult lives who are extremely vulnerable to the actions of others. It is important to understand the fact that the stories posted through social media are not a tool of comparison but rather a way to follow those who inspire you.
